Gin Martini

September 15, 2010 (part of Cocktail Chronicle)

When I look at a mediocre wine list and see that a glass of mass market wine costs the same as the whole bottle at retail, I go for gin martini. It has the highest alcohol/price ratio and as long as they make it really cold, the harshness of Beef Eater is ruggedly charming.

At home, my favorite gin for martini is Rangpur from Tanqueray. Ice cold with just the right amount of vermouth, the taste is ethereal.

As for vermouth, Dolin’s dry came highly recommended by K&L Wine Merchant at Redwood City. After a side by side straight tasting of 3, it appears to be the lightest, and … most tasteless compare to Noilly Prat. But it delivers the cleanest martini which is very nice.

The $10/375ml question is: Is it worth twice as Noilly Prat? Probably not.

  • 2 oz Rangpur gin
  • 1/3 oz Dolin dry vermouth

With ice, shake until the shaker feels painful to hold. Pour into a martini glass and serve immediately
